Getting it ‘right’ about ND

It’s Okay to Make Mistakes When Learning About Neurodivergence

When it comes to understanding neurodivergence, we often feel pressure to “get it right” from the start — but the truth is, it’s a journey, not a destination.

Neurodivergence includes conditions like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and more. Every individual experiences their neurodivergence in unique ways, and it can be difficult to navigate the nuances of these experiences, especially if you're just beginning to learn.

It’s important to remember:

Mistakes are part of the learning process. Just like with any new topic, you’ll make missteps, misinterpret things, or inadvertently reinforce stereotypes. That’s normal and part of growing in your understanding.

Listening is key. While there is a lot of information out there, the most important voices are those of neurodivergent individuals themselves. Their lived experiences are the most accurate guide.

Be open to feedback. If you make a mistake, be open to constructive criticism. We all have blind spots, and learning how to respond with humility and curiosity can help you become a better ally.

Progress is more important than perfection. What matters is your intention to be better, more inclusive, and more understanding. No one expects perfection, but showing up with a willingness to grow and learn will go a long way.

Let’s create spaces where people can make mistakes, ask questions, and continue to educate themselves about neurodivergence with empathy and humility.
