When things get tough in the classroom
The reality for teachers of neurodivergent students is that there is always something. Some culminating pain point, difficulty, a lagging skill, or a behaviour that suddenly ramps up. And the exasperation starts to creep in.
And so, the cycle starts.
First, you go deep on research. You find a new behavioural approach, or craft a new personalised student schedule, or start learning how to use declarative language. You get determined and you give it a red-hot go! And there it is – a glimmer of hope!
And sometimes it sticks (woo hoo!) but sometimes the novelty wanes, the wheels fall off or a new challenge rears its ugly head. And it all starts to disintegrate again. You get frustrated. Then exhausted.
But you pick yourself up and start again – why? Because dedicated and curious teachers of neurodivergent kids are HEROES. Truly. You are a relentless champion for difference and inclusion. As a parent to two neurospicy kids I can firmly say - thank goodness for teachers like you.
Next time you cycle into the 'research' phase of the Neurodivergent Teaching Cycle, good news!
Our teacher course "Improving Outcomes for Neurodivergent Students" has loads of evidence-based strategies and approaches for the classroom and is suitable for teachers across Australia, USA, UK, NZ and Canada.
